Chintaman Ganesh Temple is one of the oldest and most revered temples in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. Located on the banks of the holy Shipra River, about 7 km from the city center, this ancient shrine is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, known here as “Chintaharan” – the remover of worries.
The temple is believed to date back to the 11th–12th century and is associated with legends from the Ramayana. It is said that Sita, wife of Lord Rama, established the idol during their exile. The idol of Lord Ganesha here is swayambhu (self-manifested), and is flanked by his consorts Riddhi and Siddhi. Devotees come with faith that all their worries and obstacles will be removed by the grace of Chintaman Ganesh.
The temple is built in traditional Paramara-style architecture, featuring beautifully carved stone pillars and an aura of timeless spirituality. Inside the temple premises is the sacred “Banganga” well, believed to have been created by Lakshmana to provide water during their forest journey.
Aartis are performed daily in the morning and evening, drawing hundreds of devotees. Special celebrations take place during Ganesh Chaturthi and Sankashti Chaturthi. Wednesdays are particularly auspicious, with a local fair and vibrant religious gatherings.
